In other F-35 news, the director of Operational Test and Evaluation said that the so-called fly-off between the F-35 and the A-10 to show Congress how well they perform the all-important Close Air Support mission had been completed last month. (“This is not a fly-off, because they both have awesome capabilities,” Robert Behler said.) The F-35, he said, is much more survivable, as the Air Force has argued all along. “In a low-threat environment the A-10C, they really do a very good job.” The tests demonstrated what Behler called “very good synergy of the two platforms,” with the F-35 performing like a “min-AWACS.” The biggest thing to come out of the tests may be “new tactics for the fifth-gen fourth-gen mix,” the DOTE told the subcommittee.

O’Bryan certainly couldn’t go into the subject of the fighter’s EW/EA suite in any detail, or the way it might coordinate with specialized aircraft such as the E-3 Airborne Warning and Control System, RC-135 Rivet Joint, E-8 JSTARS, or EA-18G Growler jammer aircraft. He did say, however, that F-35 requirements call for it to go into battle with "no support whatever" from these systems. "I don’t know a pilot alive who wouldn’t want whatever support he can get," O’Bryan acknowledged. "But the requirements that we were given to build the airplane didn’t have any support functions built in. In other words, we had to find the target, ... penetrate the anti-access [defenses], ... ID the target, and ... destroy it by ourselves."

F-35 used sensors, on-board computers and targeting systems to find, track and destroy two airborne drones at once
F-35 Mini-Series Part I By Kris Osborn
When a single F-35 used sensors, on-board computers and targeting systems to find, track and destroy two airborne drones at the same time with air-to-air missiles, the emerging 5th Gen fighter transitioned into a new era for offensive attack missions. An F-35 pilot fired two Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles at maneuvering drones in the air, bringing synchronized attack to a new level for the aircraft, using an integrated targeting sensor, called the Electro-Optical Targeting System (EOTS). “Two AMRAAMs had multiple targets - to shoot two airborne targets simultaneously. It was a complex set up that happened over the Pacific. They were shooting at drones,” Lt. Col. Tucker Hamilton, F-35 Test Director, Edwards AFB, told reporters.

II By Kris Osborn - Warrior Maven

F-35 Sends Target Data to Aircraft Carriers & Land Weapons

F-35 Series Part II: Multi-Domain War - F-35s test attack missions with surface ships and ground weapons
F-35 Mini-Series Part II By Kris Osborn - Warrior Maven
The Pentagon’s F-35 has conducted test attack missions in tandem with other aircraft, surface ships and ground weapons as part of its maturation as both a multi-role fighter and aerial “node” or sensor system able to acquire and relay target information. Alongside its widely discussed “attack” weapons and technologies, including a 25mm cannon along with air-to-air and air-to-ground weapons, the F-35 is increasingly being developed as a platform able to perform “drone-like” targeting and surveillance missions. Referring to the F-35s long-range sensors and ISR capabilities, Pentagon officials have told Warrior Maven that the aircraft has cued land weapons and surface ships in recent exercises. “The F-35s ability to integrate with air, ground and sea platforms is there. We do missions at Edwards AFB where we integrate with aircraft carriers and destroyers,” Lt. Col. Tucker Hamilton, F-35 Test Director, Edwards AFB, told reporters. “We have been able to work with these assets to prosecute simulated attacks.” F-35 officials with the Joint Program Office explain that the F-35 has identified and transmitted targets to ground weapons, such as artillery and rockets, in recent exercises as well. This scenario, one senior official said, specifically happened during ongoing multi-domain battle exercises in the Pacific. “The F-35 is doing ISR and could possibly deliver a weapon on the same flight. We can then use what they can generate on the ground, fusing sensors and target acquisition with things that can deliver effects,” the senior defense official told Warrior. The multi-domain F-35 development is fundamental to the Pentagon's current push to better integrate air, land and sea combat systems to adapt to a serious and fast-changing near peer threat environment. "The F-35’s interoperability allows seamless information exchanges making every participant in the battlespace smarter, more lethal, and more survivable," Vice Adm. Mathias Winter, Program Executive Officer, F-35, told the House Armed Services Committee Air and Land Subcommittee in written testimony last month .

F-35C

Pentagon eyeing new mission for F-35 Joint Strike Fighter: ballistic missile defense
March 22, 2018 | Jason Sherman
The Defense Department is exploring a potential new mission for the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter: ballistic missile defense, according to a senior DOD official. The move could leverage sensors on the planned fleet of 2,456 new stealthy aircraft the U.S. military plans to buy in the coming decades to help detect and track enemy launches. Missile Defense Agency Director Lt. Gen. Sam Greaves revealed the new development in written testimony prepared for a March 22 hearing of the Senate Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee. Greaves said in addition to investing in radars and developing advanced sensors, MDA is "also leveraging services' sensors to support the BMD architecture," including the "F-35 Distributed Aperture System." MDA officials have not previously discussed the role of the F-35 DAS -- built by Northrop Grumman -- being used for ballistic missile defense. Last December, however, MDA OK'd Northrop Grumman revealing the company's sensor participated in a 2014 ballistic missile defense flight test, dubbed FTX-20, to support the BMD warning system. During the Oct. 17, 2014 test where the sensor detected and tracked a medium-range ballistic missile target, Northrop Grumman deployed an F-35 surrogate, a commercial aircraft outfitted with DAS. According to Northrop, the sensor -- also called the AN/AAQ-37 -- provides 360-degree, spherical situational awareness. When mounted on the F-35, the DAS could allow a Joint Strike Fighter to support five ballistic missile defense tasks: tracking, raid handling and reentry events, trajectory estimation, launch point estimation and impact point prediction. During the 2014 flight test, the DAS produced and communicated three-dimensional trajectory data -- of the ballistic missile launched from Pacific Missile Range Facility in Hawaii -- to the ballistic missile analysis center in San Diego, CA, company officials told reporters in December. During the launch, a DAS ground-based sensor detected a moving rocket during the experiment and categorized the event as a ballistic missile launch. The system then transmitted two-dimensional tracking information via Link 16 and the aircraft was able to track the rocket. Since the radar was communicating via Link 16, DAS can transmit information to Aegis, Patriot and Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense systems, according to a company official. "The strength comes in numbers like ants running around the Serengeti," John "Bama" Montgomery, fifth-generation improvements and derivatives program manager at Northrop Grumman Mission Systems, told reporters on Dec. 5. "You've got hundreds of F-35s or anything with a distributed aperture system, and now you have the ability to help the ballistic missile defense warning system." In this scenario, a pilot operating an aircraft outfitted with DAS will know where the ballistic missile came from and where it is going. "It kind of flips the whole discussion of how we defend and this provides resiliency to that overhead structure," Montgomery said.

James Drew

F-35s Could Shoot Down North Korean Missiles [BEST READ IT ALL AT SOURCE]
04 Dec 2017 James Drew
"Imagine if seconds after North Korea’s Hwasong-15 intercontinental ballistic missile lifted off on Nov. 28, a Lockheed Martin F-35 armed with four Raytheon AIM-120 Advanced Medium-Range Air-to-Air Missiles (Amraams) engaged the missile and destroyed it. This isn’t some far-fetched concept or marketing ploy. It is one way the U.S. Defense Department could conduct “kinetic” intercepts of North Korean or Iranian missiles in the future.
In early November, at an event in Washington hosted by the Missile Defense Advocacy Alliance, Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) threw his support behind this concept. He said F-35s should be shooting down missiles before they can escape the atmosphere with their devastating nuclear payloads. Hunter said North Korea is only 75 mi. (120 km) wide in some places, well within the range of an AIM-120D, and Iranian missiles can be targeted from inside Kuwait.
“It’s like an act of God,” Hunter says. “You have F-35s, you have Amraams, and you can shoot these things down as they go up.”
Tom Lawhead, who heads the Air Force Joint Strike Fighter Integration Office, says Northrop Grumman has been testing the F-35’s ability to detect and track ballistic missiles for several years. The company developed the F-35’s six-sensor, electro-optical/infrared AAQ-37 distributed aperture system and APG-81 active electronically scanned fire control radar, and it has been investing in applications for missile defense.
In October 2014, Northrop conducted an end-to-end test of this concept, using a ground-based distributed aperture system and radar-equipped testbed aircraft. The information was correlated via datalink to produce intercept-quality targeting data, accurate enough for an Amraam or Aegis guided-missile destroyer to use.
Lawhead says missile defense isn’t part of the F-35 program of record, and much more analysis needs to be done. But he says it is feasible, and Northrop believes it would take about three years from start to integration to unlock this potential in the F-35. He says operational F-35 squadrons would need to be trained on how to perform this mission, and pilots must have the authority to shoot the missiles down the moment they pop up. “Deep-strike missions really are the bread and butter of the F-35,” he notes.
Hunter, a member of the House Armed Services strategic forces subcommittee, says his office has been working with the Los Alamos and Livermore national laboratories to come up with a road map for using AIM-120-equipped F-35s for missile defense. The distributed aperture system was introduced to detect rocket and artillery fire and cue countermeasures, but the technology has far more applications.

FIRING HIMARS AT SEA: A CASE STUDY IN THE EVOLUTION OF THE MAGTF

According to the USMC, the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System is described as follows:
HIMARS is a C-5 transportable, wheeled, indirect fire, rocket/missile system capable of firing all current and future rockets and missiles in the Multiple-Launch Rocket System Family of Munitions (MFOM).
The HIMARS launcher consists of a fire control system, carrier (automotive platform), and launcher-loader module that performs all operations necessary to complete a fire mission.
The basic system is defined as one launcher, one resupply vehicle, and two resupply trailers.
HIMARS addresses an identified, critical warfighting deficiency in Marine Corps fire support.
HIMARS employs the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rocket to provide precision fires in support of the MAGTF. HIMARS is a transformational, responsive, general-support/general-support reinforcing precision indirect fire weapon system that accurately engages targets at long ranges (in excess of 40 miles) with high volumes of lethal precision fires in all weather conditions and throughout all phases of combat operations ashore.
But this is a platform-centric description not how it can contribute to the fight in a distributed battlespace.
For the Marines, the HIMARS can be used ashore or as they have just demonstrated can be fired from an amphibious ship as well during Dawn Blitz.
And in the most recent WTI exercise, the F-35 operated as the trigger for HIMARS firing.
This development can be missed or simply look like legacy aircraft support to a ground firing capability.
But it is not.

The F-35s sensors onboard provide significant range and ability to target discriminate which can be shared with the ground force to guide their operational trajectories as well as, in the case of HIMARS, a key target to destroy.
With the decision-making ability built into the cockpit of the F-35, the pilots can identify key choke point targets to support ground fires and can themselves add weapons to the fight.
In other words, rather than doing class ground support, the F-35 is capable of integrating the ground fires into an overall distributed strike force.
HIMARS integration with F-35 and the shipboard firing are case studies of the transition of the USMC and not simply case studies of more advanced ways of doing what they have been doing.

Why the F-35 is an invaluable asset for the UK in coalition warfare
By George Allison - September 27, 2017
A key element of 21st century air power is clearly working and smoothly implemented coalition operations, the F-35 provides a unique integrated air combat capability whereby coalitions of joint or allied F-35s can be supported in common. The F-35 was designed from the outset to bring these capabilities while also being interoperable across a coalition of air power. Two networks are core to this operability: the Link-16 and the new Multi-Function Advanced Datalink (MADL). These systems allow the F-35 to communicate with nearly all current and future NATO assets. Link-16 is currently utilised by most existing platforms fielded by NATO members and will allow F-35 to integrate seamlessly into a coalition force structure. MADL will complement the current networks as NATO’s first high bandwidth, low probability of detect and intercept connection. The fundamental design features of MADL enable all NATO F-35s in a deployed coalition to communicate within an Anti-Access/Area Denial environment. The potential for cooperation between the United Kingdom and coalition forces all using the F-35 variants is significant, in terms of coalition warfare the F-35 further increases the situational awareness of all parties to a greater extent than anything flying today, resulting in a quantum leap in capability for coalition forces. Such is the aircrafts sensor and data fusion capabilities, a small number of F-35s could provide the UK and her coalition allies with situational awareness within defended airspace where platforms such as E-3 AWACS and E-8 JSTARS would be unable to operate. F-35s could find and designate priority targets within defended airspace for a less stealthy fleet to attack from a relatively safe distance, further enhancing coalition capability. The F-35s value is not only in its stealth or combat capability, it’s also in the flying sensor network it creates in the battle space. The ability of the F-35 to drastically improve the combat capability of other assets was demonstrated recently when an F-35B and Aegis Weapon System worked together during a live fire exercise, with the F-35 passing sensor data to another platform which then engaged the target. Using the F-35 as a broad area sensor can significantly increase a warships ability to detect, track and engage a target. An unmodified US Marine Corps F-35B from the Marine Operational Test and Evaluation Squadron, based in Edwards Air Force Base, acted as an elevated sensor to detect an over-the-horizon threat. The aircraft then sent data through its Multi-Function Advanced Data Link to a ground station connected to USS Desert Ship, a land-based launch facility designed to simulate a ship at sea. Using the latest Aegis Weapon System Baseline 9.C1 and a Standard Missile 6, the system successfully detected and engaged the target. The exercise was the first live fire missile event that successfully demonstrated the integration of the F-35 to support Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air and represent a very promising exploration into the interoperability of the F-35B with other naval assets. The F-35B will drastically increase the situational awareness of the forces with which it will deploy and for the UK, where deployed numbers may be a concern, it represents a fantastic way to enhance combat capability in any coalition or national effort.

In the 1990s the USN and USMC attempted an ESG combination of three warships, a submarine, an ARG and a P-3 Orion aircraft, but that effort was stymied by command and control limitations.
Technology has moved a long way since then, and the sensors of the F-35B will help collect a lot of information in the absence of an airborne early warning aircraft like the E-2 Hawkeye.

U.S. Army Eyes F-35 As Missile Defense Sensor
Aug 8, 2017 James Drew | Aerospace Daily & Defense Report
HUNTSVILLE, Alabama—The U.S. Army is interested in the Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II, but not for dropping bombs, close air support or dogfighting. The service believes the F-35 has potential as an airborne sensor for integrated air and missile defense. The F-35 could essentially support the Army the same way that the Northrop Grumman E-2D Advanced Hawkeye acts as the eyes of the U.S. Navy for early detecting and tracking of airborne threats. It could provide targeting data to land-based interceptor systems such as Patriot long before those threats show up on ground radars. An official with the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command/Army Forces Strategic Command (USASMDC/ARSTRAT) says a classified forum has been established to investigate how the F-35 community can support the air and missile defense mission. Richard De Fatta, director of the USASMDC/ARSTRAT’s future warfare center, says discussions are ongoing about how to integrate the Joint Strike Fighter for taking out ballistic and cruise missiles. “It’s a great capability, so let’s see where it can contribute as an overhead asset,” he said at a Raytheon-sponsored forum here on Aug. 7, ahead of the annual Space and Missile Defense Symposium. “We’re seeing where we could go with it and what’s the art of the possible.” Participants in the discussions include the F-35 program office and operational users such as the U.S. Air Force. Army interest in the F-35 follows a successful demonstration by the Navy in 2016, during which a Marine Corps F-35B directed Raytheon’s Standard Missile-6 against a target drone. The flight test took place at the White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico on Sept. 12, 2016, after several years of discussion and preparation. A Lockheed official said the demonstration resulted in a center-off-mass hit of the target on the first try. The test combined two of Lockheed’s most prominent military systems, the F-35 and Aegis Combat System. Targeting data from the F-35’s active electronically scanned array radar was passed to the Aegis “Desert Ship” at White Sands via the aircraft’s secure data relay systems, the low-probability-of-intercept Multifunction Advanced Data Link (MADL). The Navy’s ultimate goal is to seamlessly integrate the F-35 and other airborne sensors into its next-generation networking architecture, the Naval Integrated Fire Control-Counter Air. Although not a substitute for the E-2D, the low-observable F-35 flies faster and is more survivable. The aircraft’s stealth features allow it to get closer to potential threats without being detected. The Army has long been pursuing tethered aerostats, such as JLens, for detection and tracking of airborne threats. But aerostats, airships and balloons are far less responsive than a fighter jet, despite being far cheaper to operate long-term.

The sensor fusion capability of the F-35 gives the F-15 an unprecedented situational awareness which allows the Eagle to fight more effectively against high-end threats

“The sensor fusion capability of the F-35A gives [our F-15s] unprecedented situational awareness which is invaluable when you’re fighting against a high-end threat,” explained Lt. Col. Scott Taylor, a F-15C pilot and the 493rd Fighter Squadron director of operations. “The key is it allows us to make quicker, more accurate decisions on targets.”
As told by Lt. Col. George Watkins, a F-35 pilot and the 34th Fighter Squadron commander, the squadrons started the training deployment by flying simple missions and have then progressed to more complex scenarios.
“We’ve been flying basic fighter maneuvers and air combat maneuvers, as well as air to ground missions. We fight air to air to get to simulated ground targets and once we take them out, we fight air-to-air to get back to our designated ‘safe’ zone,” he explained.
According to the pilots involved in the training the F-35A’s stealth and sensor capabilities increase the survivability of fourth generation aircraft and fourth generation aircraft make the F-35A more lethal.
“The stealth of the aircraft allows us to go where other aircraft cannot and our sensors and communication allow us to identify targets and allow fourth generation aircraft to dominate the airspace,” Watkins said.
F-15Cs had also the chance to fly against the F-35A.
“For me, it’s my first time dogfighting against an F-15,” said Maj. Luke Harris, a 34th Fighter Squadron F-35A pilot. “Dogfighting is a test of pilot skill, but it’s also constrained by the aircraft’s capabilities and I’ve been really impressed by the flight control and maneuverability of the F-35.”
However as explained by Harris, F-35 pilots fly undetected to a “visual merge” and engage air targets before enemies have time to react defensively, which is an advantage over the fourth generation tactics he employed when he flew the F-16.

F-B-E / A-RC-E-AWACS-35

But stealth is “only one part” of what the F-35 offers, Deptula argued.
The aircraft “needs to be thought of as a sensor-shooter,” he said. The F-35 should actually be thought of as an “F-B-E/A-RC-E-AWACS-35,” as it will integrate capabilities seen in traditional fighters, bombers, electronic warfare aircraft, reconnaissance planes, and special electronic and airborne warning and control system platforms.
