データを収集して処理する能力は、AEW&C(空中早期警戒および管制、遠距離からの脅威を検出し、他の空中ユニットに対して指揮および管制の両方を行う空中レーダーシステム)をも凌駕します。

F35 Lightning II elevates art of aerial warfare
POSTED BY: PHIL CERRONI JANUARY 10, 2014
Traditional combat dogma measures aerial combat in terms of kinematics. In other words, how fast and high can an aircraft go as well as how many Gs can it pull. The F-16 Fighting Falcon, F-18 Super Hornet and even the more recent Eurofighter Typhoon all operate according to these principles. But with a subsonic top speed of 700 knots and reaching a speed of 1.6 Mach, as well as the ability to sustain 9 Gs, the Lightning II more than holds its own in the dogfights that dominate traditional battle spaces. “(It) flies like an F-15, fights like an F-18,” said Billie Flynn, a former Super Hornet pilot in the Canadian Air Force and now a Lightning II test pilot for Lockheed. Although the Lightning II is not designed specifically for traditional dogfights, it has pitch authority comparable to the Super Hornet, which allows the aircraft pilot to get inside the turning radius of his opponent. In other words, it can bring its nose to bear on a target very quickly. Although Flynn was hesitant to reveal details, he did admit its capabilities were similar to the Raptor, which can swing its nose around while remaining virtually still. Of course, the Lightning II might be better, he hinted with a grin. “That fight we thought we had in the legacy world, it’s Top Gun, isn’t it? Really never got any more sophisticated than that, with missiles…that shoot more than 90 degrees off your shoulder. That fight doesn’t happen anymore. That fight happens in a heartbeat – I look over and I kill you. It’s over; that’s it,” Flynn said. However, the Lightning II’s strength does not lie in its prowess as a traditional fighter jet. The next generation’s stealth technology, that Lockheed and the Air Force say makes it virtually invisible to radar has the potential to change the face of aerial combat, making the hardware and tactics of fourth generation fighters obsolete. “We change the direction of aerial combat,” Flynn said. “We’re not out there rattling sabers with everyone anymore. We’ve stopped that because no one sees you coming and going. You’re going to go out, do your task and leave; and they’ll never know you’re there. You’ll never need the 70 aircraft that I took into combat, so that we could stay alive, because we needed every specialized airplane in that huge package to keep us all alive.” But the road has been a long one. The F-117 Nighthawk, the first true stealth aircraft that began operating in the early 1980s, was not actually a fighter at all. Designed for ground attacks, it could not reach supersonic speeds and had limited maneuverability. Not only did the Nighthawk suffer from limited kinematic abilities, but its stealth technology proved to be high maintenance. For example, when mechanics removed a panel for repair, they could not just bolt it back into place but had to plaster it in place.

“We’ve learned from (the) F-117, a small a cross section really needs to be all around, because you’re not just coming at someone head on – it’s all aspects. It’s not like you can control (how) everybody looks at you, precisely – it’s all aspects, 360 degrees spherically,” Flynn said. The F-22 Raptor’s increased maneuverability and miniscule radar cross section represented a major step forward in stealth fighter technology. Entering service in the early 2000s, the Raptor remains one of the most dominant aircraft extant today. However, it was not without its own drawbacks including being difficult to repair, like its Nighthawk predecessor. Many consider the Raptor to be a stronger fighter jet than the Lightning II, but its high production cost ($150 million) prompted the U.S. government to cease production in 2009 after purchasing only 183 aircraft. People like Flynn who are working on the Lightning II believe the aircraft’s increased stealth capabilities and advanced avionics will compensate for the Raptor’s kinematic advantage. Furthermore the Lightning II’s stealth panels are easier to repair than its predecessors’, and Lockheed even created a program to track nicks and dings and alert crews when maintenance might be affected.

One of the Lightning II’s most significant breakthroughs, according to its advocates, is the sensor fusion of its avionic systems which, they say, exponentially expands a pilot’s situational awareness beyond the OODA Loop (observe, orient, decide, act) fighter pilots currently employ to assess and answer threats. Instead of a pilot digesting multiple screens’ worth of data including radar, electronic warfare and electronic optical positioning, the computer analyzes and prioritizes information for the pilot, presenting it in a simple, easy to comprehend package and transmitting it to other friendly aircraft. “In your own (fourth generation) cockpit, you’d have to prioritize – how dangerous is the electronic warfare threat; who’s shooting at me; what do I have to do about it; who do I see on my radar; who’s a good guy or bad guy,” Flynn said. “The human always had to be part of that – you’re in the video game in fourth generation jets trying to do your best – at some point you lose; at some point you’re overwhelmed… But we take the pilot out of the loop; the pilot was always the limiting factor.” Even outside of a combat environment, the mental burden required by fourth generation fighters has proven deadly. “On the first F-18, we killed a very talented Top Gun graduate who drilled himself into the tundra of Canada going more than 700 knots, because he had his head buried in the radar screen and never looked up,” Flynn said. But sensor fusion requires a colossal amount of code. Compared to the Raptor’s programming that included 2.2 million lines of code and only had a 50 percent success rate coming off the line, the Lightning II is a behemoth, chewing through 8.8 million lines of code in order to run its systems.

Sensor fusion opens a vast array of missions to the Lightning II. Beyond going toe-to-toe with existing fighters, the Lightning II is capable of conducting solo, tactical and strategic bombing missions (one Lighting II can accomplish what it used to take a fleet of B-52s to do). Its ability to collect and process data surpasses even the AEW&Cs (Airborne Early Warning and Control, an airborne radar system that both detects threats from a great distance and exercises command and control over other aerial units). Additionally, a pilot flying a Lightning II conducts reconnaissance as he fights. “We give the commander the ability to see so many more spectrums from horizon to horizon, information in detail that he never had,” Flynn said. “We need pilots to do entirely different missions up there, not just flying an airplane like they were in the fourth gen. “There’s so much information presented on the big screens in front of them, that he needs to be focused on that, and he does not need to be focused on the manual task of flying an airplane… If he’s flying he’s not managing sensors.” Flynn believes, when taken in perspective, the sheer power and versatility offered by the Lighting II will make current modes of air combat obsolete.

Superior in dogfights
They elaborate on the experience after one and a half hour of dogfight-training, one on one over White Tank Mountains, the training are west of the base. The roar of the engines is unmistakable as they return. It's the most powerful engine in any fighter ever and will be noticed well when stationed at Ørland in Norway. “Tintin” is sweating after the maneuvers, and his helmet-hair gets damper when he comes out of the plane into 35 degrees C desert air. So far the plane is cleared for up to 7g. When the next software update comes alog it will be 9g like the F-16. Even now the F-35 has maneuvering capabilities that makes “Tintin” and “Dolby” rewrite the manual for dogfights. Traditionally, the one with the highest speed has the advantage in dogfights. The F-35 gives the pilots the possibility to maneuver with much higher AOA. In comparison to the F-16 it has much better nose pointing capabilities. -The ability to point towards my opponent makes me able to deliver a weapon sooner than I'm used to. It forces my opponent to react more defensive and gives me the ability to slow down fast, Hanche says. -Since I can slow down fast I can point my plane at my enemy for longer before the roles are reversed. The backside is that you loose energy, but it's not really a problem. The plane has so much engine power and low drag that the acceleration is awesome. With a F-16 I would have had to dive to gain as much speed after a hard turn. Hanche has earlier put words to his experience of flying the F-35 in several post on “The combat aircraft blog” Here he describes how the aggressive F-35 gives him the ability to stick to an opponent and keep him in his sights:
Overlegen i nærkamp

F-35A Makes Air Show Demo Debut as Program Picks up Speed
Le Bourget, France—The F-35A made its first-ever public demonstration flight here June 19, performing a six-minute routine meant to showcase the stealthy strike fighter’s combat capabilities. Lockheed Martin chief test pilot Alan Norman noted the routine, which closed out the day’s flying schedule, was done in a combat-ready aircraft. It included a high-rate-of-climb afterburner takeoff, a 100-knot 50-degree angle of attack low-speed pass, and a 7G minimum-radius turn.
Lockheed Martin designed and flew the routine because of the Air Force's resource limitations surrounding the F-35, although Lockheed and USAF officials noted this is exactly how the F-22’s air show routine also began a decade ago. USAF is working its way through pilot and maintainer shortages that limit its F-35 flexibility, and the service also wishes to increase its Lightning II buy rate from 46 aircraft per year to 60.
A pair of F-35s from Hill AFB, Utah, were brought to Paris for the demonstration so that operational, combat-ready aircraft in the most current configuration would be the ones flying and on display. Col. Todd Canterbury, director of USAF’s F-35 integration office, stressed, “This aircraft is operational, it is ready for combat,” and it offers “unmatched lethality.”
Canterbury noted that in April Red Flag operations, F-35s tallied a 20-to-1 kill ratio against adversary fighters, but said that lopsided number was not the important takeaway. More impressive, he said, is the way the F-35 makes USAF’s fourth-generation aircraft better. For example, he said Red Flag F-35s were able to escort legacy fighters into high-threat areas without losses.
Asked if an F-35 could be expected to win a close-range dogfight against most other aircraft, Lt. Col. Scott Gunn simply declared, “Without a doubt.”

F-35 puts in a ‘Beast’ of a display in Paris
Lockheed Martin has performed the first public flying demonstration with a US Air Force F-35A Lightning II at this week’s Paris Air Show. Flown by Lockheed Martin test pilot Billie Flynn, the display is the first aerobatic routine by the F-35A.
The display is aimed at silencing critics who say the F-35 struggles with maneuverability, especially in close-quarters engagements — the within visual range (WVR) arena.
Speaking at the show today, USAF F-35A pilot Lt Col Scott ‘Cap’ Gunn said the six-minute display was designed to showcase power and angle of attack (AoA) attributes of the F-35, saying: ‘the more you can point [the nose of the jet], the more effective you can be.’
One of the sequences of the display sees Flynn fly a ‘pedal turn’, designed to demonstrate the post-stall flying qualities of the F-35. Gunn says: ‘I fly a lot of BFM [basic fighter maneuvers] where I try to get slow. I fly mostly with the pedals; the control laws allow the jet to rotate and go where I want it to turn.’
The F-35 at the show is flying with Block 3i software, meaning it is limited to 7g. However, it can fly to above 50 degrees AoA.
Lockheed Martin’s chief test pilot Al Norman says the F-35 has ‘tremendous instantaneous pitch rate’, adding that in his opinion only the F-22 has superior post-stall performance.
Norman referred to a ‘Beast mode’ in the display; here, Flynn powers off the runway and also out of the high AoA slow pass, utilizing the 40,000lb of thrust on offer.
Lt Col Gunn said the show was being flown with a loadout representative of internal AIM-120 AMRAAMs. Of course, the F-35s primary close-in weapon will be externally mounted AIM-9Xs, so this display isn’t fully representative of how the F-35 will fly close-in BFM, however Norman says carrying external Sidewinders has little impact on performance. It is also worth noting that the envelope will be expanded out to 9g with the forthcoming Block 3F software.
Whilst it was good to see the F-35 being put through its paces in a full-up aerobatic routine, it’s worth noting that there was nothing here that hasn’t been seen in displays by other aircraft. The ‘falling leaf’ pedal turn sequence was arguably the most impressive, and the F-35 is clearly no Raptor

F-35 Air Demo Debut Highlighted Combat Maneuvering
Le Bourget, France—Yes, it certainly looked (and sounded) impressive, but make no mistake: Monday’s F-35A air show flying debut was a demonstration of the fighter’s capabilities, not a series of aerobatic stunts. Lockheed Martin and Air Force officials were clearly proud of the fact that this week’s Paris Air Show flights are being flown by operational F-35s out of Hill AFB, Utah—jets that are ready to go to war. In fact, the aircraft flown Monday was one of the same Lightning IIs that had deployed to Europe this spring in the type’s first-ever overseas deployment.
Lt. Col. Scott Gunn, operational support squadron commander at Eglin AFB, Fla., and an F-35 instructor pilot, on June 20 quickly ran through the real-world significance of several of the demo’s maneuvers. The high power, rapid takeoff, for example, allows the aircraft to get into the air quickly, important for aircraft on alert or in any sort of emergency situation.
The demonstrated ability to stay up in a low-speed loop generates advantages against aircraft that cannot maintain their altitude at low airspeed, Gunn said. If an enemy falls away, the F-35’s pilot is in an advantageous position to shoot it down.
The F-35’s ability to fly at a high angle of attack (the difference between where the aircraft’s nose is pointed and the direction in which the jet is moving) is a big advantage. “I get to point my nose wherever I need to fight,” Gunn noted. The aircraft’s maneuverability also allows an F-35 pilot to get inside an enemy’s turning circle.
One segment of the routine involved a level pass at less than 100 knots with the F-35’s nose pitched up 50 degrees. Gunn said this move would allow an F-35 pilot to defeat an enemy who cannot simultaneously fly so slow and level. Less-capable fighters would blast past the F-35, leaving the Lightning II behind them and in position for the kill.
Gunn and Alan Norman, Lockheed’s chief test pilot, were repeatedly asked about the F-35’s dogfighting capabilities and limitations, given past reports that claimed the new strike fighter was not as capable as some legacy aircraft in short-range engagements. Both stayed positive, noting the F-35 is already highly capable and getting better all the time. For example, jets are currently limited to 7G turns with Block 3I mission software, but the next software block, which will begin rolling out in August, allows for 9G turns.
Gunn said, even today, an F-35 pilot can use stealth and unmatched situational awareness to defeat enemy fourth generation fighters beyond visual range, engaging enemies at a time and place of his choosing.

Unleash the Beast: F-35 Aerial Demo Sends Message to Dogfight Doubters
SALON DU BOURGET, France -- There are now 220 F-35 Joint Strike Fighters in service around the world, but there has never been a public aerial demonstration of the aircraft's maneuver capabilities. At least, not until now.

"Why do we bring a fifth-generation airplane whose dominance and sensor fusion have nothing to do with an air show? It's because seeing is believing and, for 10 years, no one quite understood. And we have struggled so often to explain the quantum leap of what fifth-gen dominance is all about," Lockheed test pilot Billie Flynn told reporters ahead of his second demonstration flight. "And frankly, you've got to see it face-to-face, you've got to listen to the noise before you come to believe it," he said. "So we take simple, yet orchestrated, maneuvers to unleash the beast that is the F-35 to help make everyone understand, because it's visceral to see what this airplane does." The aerial demonstration comes two years after a leaked test pilot brief revealed internal doubts about the F-35's ability to dogfight, or participate in close combat with another aircraft. War is Boring reported in 2015 that a test involving the F-35A and the F-16 Fighting Falcon showed the 5th-generation aircraft "at an energy disadvantage": unable to climb or turn at the speeds necessary to face off against another aircraft or evade enemy fire. But Lockheed's chief F-35 test pilot, Alan Norman, crowed that this week's demonstrations erase all doubts about speed and maneuver. "I have thousands and thousands of hours in the F-16. I just can't do some of this stuff in an F-16," he said. One such maneuver, Norman said, is a high-altitude pedal turn featured in the demonstration that highlights the pilot's ability to point the nose of the aircraft precisely and maintain total control, even while battling gravity in descent. "The only aircraft I've ever done that in is an F-22," he said. "I think what we're trying to really get across that you haven't been able to see, that we've known all along, is the fantastic handling qualities and maneuvering of this airplane." Moves such as the pedal turn and the slow pass highlight the F-35's ability to stay on an enemy's tail or lose a hostile aircraft with rapid deceleration in a "Top Gun"-style maneuver. The square loop shows how the plane can turn on a dime at high and low speeds as it continues the fight. The F-35 is still flying with a limited envelope: Since the two aircraft that went to the show are equipped with 3I software, instead of the 3F version, they are restricted to pulling 7 Gs or fewer. The total envelope, with the final software version, will go up to 9 Gs, Norman said. While fourth-generation aircraft with impressive and precise maneuvering capability abound around the world, Norman said the F-35 is unlike some competitors in that it completed the demo in its combat configuration. "Most likely that [Russian-made] Su-35 you see performing at an air show has been cleaned off; it is in an air show profile," Norman said. "So probably doesn't have any pylons, doesn't have any weapons, it is in a configuration that will not fight in combat. The F-35 in its configuration is how it will fight in combat. It carries weapons internally; it would fly just the way it was flying in this demo if it was out there fighting an SU-35." Unlike the F-22, the Air Force's other fifth-generation fighter, however, the F-35 wasn't designed for close combat. It specializes in close-air support and ordnance missions and has been hailed for its ability to destroy fourth-generation fighters before they even become aware of its presence, thanks to its stealth profile. Flynn said the aircraft's true strengths can't be seen in an air show. "If you see it up there, if that airplane impresses you, just imagine the real special part of an F-35 is what you'll never ever see out there," he said. "It's like fighting Mr. Invisible."

Ⅷ. Operational
While the flight test team will explore legacy high AoA maneuvers for handling qualities, it will be the Operational Test and Evaluation team that will truly develop high AoA maneuvers for the F-35.
In the operational World, a pilot should rarely be taking the F-35 into the high angle-of-attack regime, but the ability to do so could make the difference between being the victor or the victim in air-to-air combat, several of which are mentioned below.
If being tailed by an enemy fighter, a pilot can rapidly slow his aircraft by pulling back on the stick to rapidly increase AoA and, by extension, drag on the aircraft causing the pursuer to quickly become out front and vulnerable.
At this point, the previously pursued pilot can pitch his nose down and get a shot off to take out the enemy.
A similar maneuver called the “Pugachev's Cobra” can be seen in Fig.5 While this puts the jet in a low energy state, it now has the advantage.
Similar to other high AoA platforms, the ability to generate yaw rates at high AoA allows the pilot to change his heading quickly through a high yaw rate rather than a sustained or instantaneous G turn.
The J-Turn, or Herbst maneuver, represents this ability by using a high angle of attack with a body axis yaw rate, as seen in Fig.6.
Circle flow combat is one of the basic fighter maneuvers where two pilots engage in a sustained or instantaneous turn towards or away from one another.
In this fight, the first pilot to get his aircraft's nose on the enemy will get the first shot off.
In Fig.7 is a combat scenario where both the aircraft turn towards one another.
Here the friendly fighter has high AoA capability, allowing him, with proper timing, to pitch his nose up to get line of sight first on the enemy.
Used properly, high angle-of-attack capability can be the “gold nugget” that determines whether or not the F-35 comes out the victor in air combat.
When combined with an already impressive arsenal of weapons, sensors, and stealth, the JSF will be a formidable foe in the air.

① X-31 enters maneuver at high speed(M 0.5 or greater)
② X-31 decelerates rapidly while increasing “angle-of-attack”
③ ...exceed conventional aerodynamic limit(Stall)- needs thrust vectoring for control
④ Angle-of-attack increases to maximum of 70°
⑤ X-31 rapidly “cones” to now flight direction
⑥ X-31 lowers nose and accelerates to high speed
⑦X-31 now flying in opposite direction
